  • Upgrade Fujitsu U1010 with 32GB SSD

    I got the U1010 few years ago, way before those netbooks came out. Last week i spent some good time with the U1010 and was fed up with the 1.8″ 40GB 4200rpm HDD. This dump HDD is heavy, consumes alot of power, produces heat like fire and is extremely slow. I finally made up my mind on changing the HDD to become a SSD.

    A proper SSD is too $$$$, I chose to use a high speed CF card instead. Besides the card, I need a CF->50pin converter.

    This is what i got.

    400x, UDMA support. It’s UDMA 5.

    40GB vs 32GB… not much diff…………….. The CF->50pin 1.8″ converter.

    Combined.

    both HDD can be recognized. First i forgot to format the CF and it stayed as FAT32 format. Stupid me forgot that this cloning wouldn’t work under different format, the block table is totally diff….. hence…. 1st cloning was a failure.

    Hence in 2nd attempt I formated the CF to NTFS, then i did the cloning.

    And no wonder it took like 2hrs to complete the 1st cloning, 2nd attempt only took around 1/2hr. Once cloning is completed, It is ready to be put into the u1010.

    Disconnect the HDD module with the HDD->USD converter. Open the back cover.

    See the original 40GB HDD, disconnected it.

    plug in the 32GB SSD.

    The comp read the HDD ok.

    Do a HDD speed test on both.

    See the speed diff? 6x mb/s vs 2x mb/s….. 3 times faster!!!!!

    And of course, it becomes alot lighter, won’t burn my hands when i am holding the comp at the bottom and the battery lasts even longer!

    To feel the “SPEED” of the SSD…. that’s what people usually do….

    This is how long it takes to reboot the comp with SSD. pay attention at 35sec….. the winXP logo page with running bar…… it only runs once!!!!! That tells the speed of the HDD~~~

    U1010, i will use you even more from now on~~ Love you~~~~
